Key points

  1. Continuous trading starts at 2:20 pm IST on Sunday, November 8, and runs to 3:30 pm for most stocks.
  2. The block deal window opens at 1:50 pm and pre-open runs from 2:05 pm to 2:20 pm.

Indian stock exchanges open for a special Muhurat trading session on Sunday afternoon, the traditional Diwali hour that marks the start of the Hindu financial year, Samvat 2083.

The session falls on the day of Diwali Laxmi Pujan, and the first window opens well before the main trading bell.

The schedule

The block deal session runs from 1:50 pm to 2:05 pm. Pre-open order entry follows from 2:05 pm to 2:20 pm, and continuous trading in the normal market begins at 2:20 pm IST.

For most stocks, trading closes at 3:30 pm. Stocks in the call auction segment trade only until 3:15 pm, after which closing auction order entry runs from 3:20 pm to 3:30 pm and matching to 3:35 pm. A post-close session runs from 3:50 pm to 4:00 pm.

In futures and options and currency derivatives, the normal market is open from 2:20 pm to 3:40 pm. Commodity derivatives trade from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm.

What traders should know

Muhurat trading is symbolic in its timing, but every order is a live trade that creates a settlement obligation. An auspicious date does not remove market risk.

The session carries a cultural association with Diwali and the idea of a fresh financial beginning.

The session comes after a strong week. On Friday, November 6, the Sensex closed up 1,718.01 points at 81,028.02 and the Nifty 50 ended at 25,030.35, its seventh straight session of gains.
