Key points
- BJP president Nitin Nabin brings the 'Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao' campaign to Gorakhpur on Wednesday.
- Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is expected to join him.
- The march comes on the same day as Rahul Gandhi's Punjab rally.
BJP president Nitin Nabin is due to bring the party’s “Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao” campaign (Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy) to Gorakhpur on Wednesday, the home town of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The day’s programme includes a padyatra through the city, a dialogue with young people, a public meeting and a meeting with local intellectuals. Yogi Adityanath and state BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary are expected to join him.
The BJP has been taking the marches from state to state, saying they are meant to answer the opposition’s “misinformation, propaganda and orchestrated chaos”. Nabin led the Rohtak leg on Sunday while supporters of the Congress-led INDIA bloc gathered at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan to protest against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Gorakhpur event falls on the same day as Rahul Gandhi’s Insaaf Rally in Punjab’s Sangrur, where the Congress opens its campaign for next year’s Assembly election. Uttar Pradesh also votes in 2027, and Gorakhpur, the seat of the Gorakhnath Math that Adityanath heads, is the BJP’s strongest ground in the east of the state.
Nabin has sharpened his attack on the opposition in recent weeks. At a rally in Patna on 17 October he called Rahul Gandhi a “puppet of a foreign toolkit gang” and said the opposition was insulting the people’s mandate by blaming the Election Commission. The party is expected to use the Gorakhpur stage to press the same line in Uttar Pradesh.
