Key points

  1. Como beat Lens 9-1 away, with Tasos Douvikas scoring a hat-trick.
  2. Manchester City won 3-2 at Leipzig and Arsenal won 2-1 at Slavia Prague.
  3. Porto thrashed Napoli 4-1, leaving the Italian champions outside the top 24.

Como produced the result of the Champions League season so far on Wednesday night, winning 9-1 at Lens in northern France. Tasos Douvikas scored a hat-trick, Nico Paz and Martin Baturina were among the scorers, and Matteo Papaccioli scored on his debut in the 92nd minute to complete the rout.

Cesc Fabregas, the Como coach, kept his voice low after the game. “A wonderful night for Como, but we need to keep our feet on the ground,” he said.

The English clubs both came away with wins. Manchester City won 3-2 at Leipzig, a result that lifts them into the top eight with nine points. Arsenal beat Slavia 2-1 in Prague and, still unbeaten in the competition, climb to third on ten points. Only Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, who won late in Athens earlier in the evening, have won all four games.

Napoli had the worst night of the big names. Scott McTominay’s goal had levelled it at 1-1 in Porto, but Gabriel Veiga, Jakub Kiwior and a late Samu penalty made it Porto 4, Napoli 1, and Rafa Marin was sent off two minutes from time. “These are the mistakes that cost you matches,” said Napoli coach Max Allegri. Napoli drop out of the top 24, the places that lead to the knockout rounds.

Borussia Dortmund beat Real Betis 2-1, the Spanish side’s first dropped points of the campaign. Club Brugge won 2-1 at PSV Eindhoven, and Norway’s Viking beat Sabah 4-1 to move into the top 24.

Earlier on Wednesday, Fenerbahce beat Liverpool 3-2 in Istanbul.
