Key points
- Arshdeep Singh took two wickets in the powerplay, Will Young and Henry Nicholls.

India’s new-ball pair made the first hour count at Eden Park. Arshdeep Singh took both early wickets in the powerplay, and Gurnoor Brar then removed the dangerous Tim Seifert, leaving New Zealand three down in the first of five ODIs in Auckland.
Shubman Gill chose to bowl after a rain delay that pushed the toss back by about 20 minutes. Arshdeep struck with the third ball of his third over, when Will Young was caught by Shreyas Iyer at square leg with New Zealand on 22. He came back to have Henry Nicholls caught by Naman Dhir for 9.
Seifert falls after a quick start
Seifert had kept New Zealand moving. He was 22 not out when the hosts reached 44 for 2 after nine overs, with Daryl Mitchell on 4, and he hit Brar for six soon after. Brar had the last word: Seifert picked out Ruturaj Gaikwad, giving the young seamer his first wicket. Live listings had Brar on 1 for 19 with Mitchell on 19 and Tom Latham on 3 at the crease.
Anshul Kamboj shared the new ball duties with the two left-armers as India rotated their seamers on a ground with short straight boundaries.
What comes next
New Zealand still have most of their 50 overs to bat, and Mitchell is the wicket India want most. Gill’s side chose to chase because teams batting second have won more often at Eden Park. Wellington hosts the second ODI on 7 November.
