India won the second ODI by four runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in Wellington on Saturday, November 7, after rain ended the match with the chase on a knife edge. The win gives them a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
After a rain delay, captain Shubman Gill chose to bowl in a match cut to 47 overs a side. Gurnoor Brar took 4 for 30 from his 10 overs, the best figures of his ODI career, and was named player of the match. New Zealand slid from 112 for 5 to 132 for 9 and were all out for 134 in 41 overs.
Daryl Mitchell held the innings together with 55 off 104 balls and Mitchell Santner added 31 off 38. Auqib Nabi, Anshul Kamboj and Axar Patel took two wickets each, while Arshdeep Singh went for 16 in seven overs.
A chase that wobbled
The target of 135 looked small, but India were 40 for 3 after ten overs and Gill was out for a duck. Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy took three wickets each. Rohit Sharma made 23 off 28 and Shreyas Iyer top-scored with 30 off 46 balls.
KL Rahul was unbeaten on 26 when the rain returned. India were 113 for 7 after 26 overs, 22 short of the target, and the DLS par score at that stage was 109. Players left the field after the last ball of the 26th over and play did not resume, so India were declared winners by four runs.
Gill said afterwards that it was not easy out there and that the team kept losing wickets.
What next
The third ODI is on Tuesday, November 10, at Seddon Park in Hamilton, starting at 7:30 am IST. India can seal the series there.
