Key points
- The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns 27-6 in Week 9 of the NFL season.
- Jaylen Warren ran for 143 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
- The win lifts Pittsburgh to 6-2; Cleveland drop to 5-3.
The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns 27-6 on Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh, early on Monday in India, running the ball through their AFC North rivals and shutting them out after the second quarter.
Jaylen Warren did most of the damage. The running back carried 17 times for 143 yards and a touchdown, a 1-yard run in the third quarter that ended any hope of a Cleveland comeback. Rico Dowdle added 56 yards and a score of his own as Pittsburgh piled up 200 rushing yards to Cleveland’s 34.
The Steelers led 20-6 at half-time after Pat Freiermuth scored from a yard out just before the break. Aaron Rodgers needed only 13 completions from 25 attempts for 172 yards, with one interception, because the ground game was doing the work. Coach Mike McCarthy had said in the build-up that “every game comes down to a one-possession game” in the playoffs; this one never got close.
Cleveland moved the ball through the air but could not finish drives. Deshaun Watson completed 27 of 39 passes for 324 yards without a touchdown, and tight end Harold Fannin Jr. caught 10 passes for 154 yards. Andre Szmyt kicked both of the Browns’ field goals, including one from 49 yards. Two lost fumbles hurt them, and the defence of T. J. Watt and Cameron Heyward kept Watson under pressure.
The result lifts Pittsburgh to 6-2 for the season, while Cleveland fall to 5-3.
