Key points

  1. Coal India shares traded 4.22% higher at ₹405.40 at noon on Monday.
  2. October production hit a monthly record of 67.2 million tonnes, up about 19% from a year earlier.
  3. Supply crossed 70 million tonnes in a month for the first time, at 70.3 MT.

Shares of Coal India rose more than 4% on Monday as investors cheered the state-run miner’s best month ever for both digging and shipping coal.

At noon the stock stood at ₹405.40, up 4.22%, with about 58 lakh shares changing hands, making it one of the five biggest gainers on the Nifty 50 on a day when the wider market was up more than 1%.

A month of records

The company said it produced 67.2 million tonnes of coal in October, its highest for any month and well above the previous record of 62.47 million tonnes set in October 2024. Output was about 19% higher than the 56.4 million tonnes it mined in October last year.

Supplies did even better. Coal India shipped 70.3 million tonnes, the first time its monthly dispatches have crossed 70 million tonnes, beating the 69.4 million tonnes it moved in March this year.

Much of that coal went to power stations. Supplies to the power sector reached a record 57.1 million tonnes, and the railways loaded an average of 310 rakes a day for power plants, up from the earlier best of 302.8 in March 2025. Mahanadi Coalfields, its Odisha arm, crossed 20 million tonnes of supplies in a month for the first time.

Why it matters

The numbers came as Coal India marked its 51st foundation day on Sunday. The company mined 768 million tonnes in 2025-26 and has set itself a target of 815 million tonnes this year, and a record October moves it closer to that goal.

It is also spending faster. Capital expenditure in the first half of the year rose 27% to ₹7,966 crore, more than it had planned for the period.
