Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will flag off the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper train on Sunday, giving the two cities a fast overnight link on the newest version of the country’s flagship train.
The inaugural run is due to leave platform 1 at Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru at 12:15 pm. Union minister H. D. Kumaraswamy and Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna are due to attend.
The launch falls on Karnataka Rajyotsava, as the state marks 70 years since it was formed on 1 November 1956, and links the country’s technology hub with its financial capital on a single overnight train.
Once the regular service begins, train 27652 will leave SMVT at 7:45 pm and reach Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus at 11:55 am the next day, a journey of a little over 16 hours. It will run every day except Monday.
The train will stop at Anantapur and Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh, Raichur, Yadgir and Kalaburagi in north Karnataka, and Solapur, Pune and Kalyan in Maharashtra. That gives towns across north Karnataka and Solapur a direct overnight train to both metros.
The Vande Bharat sleeper is the overnight version of the chair car trains that have run on daytime routes across the country since 2019. Fares for the new service were not given at the launch.
