Key points

  1. Amit Shah said the Centre is ready to convene a special session of Parliament.
  2. He dared Rahul Gandhi to debate EVMs, the SIR and infiltrators.
  3. Shah said the INDIA bloc's mock Parliament was the only place Rahul could become Prime Minister.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday repeated his offer of a special session of Parliament on the opposition’s charges over the electoral rolls, and dared Rahul Gandhi to turn up and debate.

“Be it EVMs, SIR, infiltrators, I challenge you from Hyderabad,” Shah said at Moazzam Jahi Market, where he ended a BJP padayatra through the old city. “We are ready to convene a special session of Parliament. Come for debate.”

Shah first made the offer in Lucknow last week. On Monday he said the opposition had not taken up the challenge. “So far, they have not had the courage to accept the challenge,” he said. “They only want to remain in the headlines through anarchy because they cannot face Parliament.”

‘Mock satisfaction’

Shah also mocked the INDIA bloc’s mock Parliament, held at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence on Saturday, at which opposition parties passed a resolution seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Rahul Gandhi, he said, should have made himself Prime Minister there, since that might bring some peace to Sonia Gandhi’s heart. “At least that would have given him some mock satisfaction because, in reality, he can never become Prime Minister,” he said.

“Rahul holds the Constitution in hand, but doesn’t respect the Constitution,” Shah said. “Rahul ji, you don’t allow Parliament to run.”

He called the Congress a party “on a ventilator” and said that if a session is held, Prime Minister Narendra Modi would “shred Congress into pieces”. On the SIR itself, he promised to clear infiltrators from the rolls: “We will remove every infiltrator from the electoral rolls.”
