Key points

  1. Himanta Biswa Sarma said he would send Rahul Gandhi to Bangladesh.
  2. He called the vote theft charge a matter of 'stealing hearts'.
  3. He demanded a fresh SIR in Seemanchal, Assam and West Bengal.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said he would send Rahul Gandhi to Bangladesh, taking aim at the Congress leader at a BJP rally in Bihar’s Purnea district.

Sarma said he, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari would together send Gandhi to Bangladesh, where he “could perhaps win an election”. The remark set off a fresh political row on a day when both sides were trading charges over the voter roll revision.

The rally was part of the BJP’s Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao campaign, which began in Bhagalpur earlier this week. Sarma defended the revision of electoral rolls and the removal of names such as Babar and Aurangzeb from voter lists, and accused Gandhi of raising needless fears about it.

He mocked the Congress leader’s “vote theft” campaign, saying the BJP’s wins were really about “stealing hearts”. Pointing to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, he asked whether that too could be called stealing hearts.

Sarma then demanded a fresh Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar’s Seemanchal region, Assam and West Bengal.

There was no immediate response from Gandhi or the Congress to the Purnea remarks.
