Key points

  1. Denis Shapovalov retired while leading 4-1 in the third set against Karen Khachanov.

  3. Khachanov will meet Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Moise Kouame in the second round.

Denis Shapovalov was a break up in the deciding set against Karen Khachanov at the Paris Masters on Monday night when his body let him down. The Canadian retired with a right thigh problem, sending the Russian into the second round 6-4, 6-7, 1-4 retired.

It had been a tight first-round match. Khachanov took the first set 6-4, and Shapovalov levelled it in a tie-break. He then broke early in the third and was serving at 3-1, 40-30, when he stopped, clutched his right thigh and called for the physio.

He came back after a six-minute medical timeout, limping, and still held serve for 4-1. But he could not carry on, and after signs from his box he quit during the following game. Whether the problem was a muscle tear or cramp was not clear on the night.

Khachanov will play 13th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or French wildcard Moise Kouame in the second round. Those two meet on Tuesday.
