Key points

  1. A speeding trailer ran over villagers who had stopped to help a scooter rider near the Jone-Ludru turn in Khunti.
  2. Seven people, four women and three children, were killed; a 12-year-old boy died in hospital.
  3. The driver fled, and villagers blocked the road near the Karra railway crossing on Friday.

Seven people were killed in Jharkhand’s Khunti district on Thursday night when a speeding trailer truck ploughed into villagers who had stopped to help a scooter rider lying hurt beside the road. Four of the dead were women and three were children.

The accident happened at about 10 pm on November 5, 2026, near the Jone-Ludru turn on the Karra-Torpa main road, in the Karra police station area. A scooter had crashed near a culvert and its rider had fallen into the bushes, and people from nearby homes, many of them women and children, gathered on the road to pull him out.

A crowd on a dark bend

As they stood there, an 18-wheeler trailer coming from the Torpa side at high speed drove straight into the group. Six people died on the spot. A 12-year-old boy was rushed to Khunti Sadar Hospital but died during treatment. A young girl was injured and is being treated at the same hospital.

The truck was reported to have smashed through the culvert railing and come to rest in a roadside pit. Its driver and his helper ran away in the dark, and no arrest had been reported by Friday afternoon. Some villagers alleged the driver had been drinking, a claim the police have not confirmed.

Khunti’s police chief said early information pointed to a crowd forming after the scooter crash and the truck then running over those standing on the road. The police have begun an investigation.

Anger on the road

By Friday morning, grief had turned to anger. Villagers burned tyres and blocked the main road near the Karra railway crossing, stopping all traffic. They demanded the driver’s immediate arrest, government jobs and proper compensation for the families of the dead, and treatment for the injured girl.

They also asked for speed breakers and regular police checks on the stretch. Residents said the Jone-Ludru turn is badly lit and dangerous, and that heavy vehicles often race through it at night.

Police and district officials reached the spot and held talks with the protesters. They promised that help and compensation would be given in line with government rules, without naming an amount, and extra police were posted in the area as a precaution.

Leaders grieve

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “Deeply pained by the loss of lives” in the accident and prayed for the injured to recover, in a message posted by his office. President Droupadi Murmu also offered her condolences to the bereaved families.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren said the news of seven deaths had “deeply saddened” him. He offered his sympathy to the families and wished the injured a quick recovery.

The names of the dead had not been released by Friday afternoon. For the villages along the Karra-Torpa road, the question now is whether the promised speed breakers and checks arrive before the next heavy truck takes the bend.
