Key points

  1. The Sensex closed up 1,233.25 points at 75,692.78, a gain of 1.66%.
  2. Reliance Industries rose 11.6%, the best performer on the Nifty 50.
  3. The Nifty Oil & Gas index climbed 5.95% as crude eased to about $108 a barrel.

Indian shares finished above their morning highs on Monday, as a 41% jump in Reliance Industries’ quarterly profit and a slide in oil prices drove the benchmarks to a third straight session of gains.

The Sensex ended at 75,692.78, up 1,233.25 points, or 1.66%. The Nifty 50 closed at 23,440.80, up 387.70 points, or 1.68%. It was a sharp finish after a wobbly early afternoon: at 2 pm the Sensex had been only 652 points higher at 75,111.79 as IT shares pulled it back. Buying returned in the last 90 minutes and carried the index past its morning peak of 75,557.06.

Reliance does the heavy lifting

Reliance Industries rose 11.6%, the best performance on the Nifty 50 and the biggest single push behind the rally. The company’s September-quarter profit attributable to owners rose 41% from a year earlier to ₹25,548 crore, led by its oil-to-chemicals business.

Its weight lifted the whole energy pack. The Nifty Oil & Gas index gained 5.95%, helped by crude trading at about $108 a barrel, down from last week’s high of $117.

Metals and autos join in

Steel makers were close behind. Tata Steel rose 5.83% and JSW Steel 5.13%, taking the Nifty Metal index up 3.21%. Shriram Finance and Coal India each gained 4.88%.

Carmakers also had a good day after October sales figures in which domestic passenger vehicle dispatches crossed 5 lakh units, a record. The Nifty Auto index rose 1.33%, the Consumer Durables index 2.7% and the PSU Bank index 1.36%.

The rally was broad. Of the 3,713 stocks traded on the NSE, 2,445 advanced and 1,164 declined, and 38 of the 50 Nifty stocks ended higher. The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 1.19% and the Smallcap 100 0.71%. The combined value of NSE-listed companies stood at ₹478.39 lakh crore at the close.

Infosys stays in the red

Technology was the weak spot all day. Infosys fell 2.03%, the worst performer on the Nifty, followed by ICICI Bank, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank, each down less than 1%.

Foreign investors had bought about ₹6,300 crore of Indian shares last week, a turn after heavy selling that has taken their net outflow for 2026 to ₹2.95 lakh crore. Asian markets were mixed, with Seoul’s Kospi up 2.19% and Japan’s Nikkei slightly lower. The India VIX, a gauge of expected volatility, rose 1.37% to 15.51.

The September-quarter results season continues on Tuesday, with State Bank of India among the companies due to report.
