Tyrese Maxey scored a season-high 38 points as the Philadelphia 76ers came back late to beat the Charlotte Hornets 109-104 on Saturday night, early on Sunday in India, with LeBron James and Joel Embiid both rested.
The Sixers were playing their second game in less than a day, after a 98-93 win over the New York Knicks in the NBA Cup on Friday. Maxey carried them from the start, with 15 points in the first quarter as Charlotte’s shooters got hot. It was his seventh straight game with 25 or more to open the season.
How the game turned
The Hornets led 97-90 with about five minutes left after a Brandon Miller block and a Moussa Diabate dunk in front of a sellout crowd of 19,533. Anfernee Simons, who scored 19 off the bench, hit two baskets to close the gap, and Maxey’s free throws with 1:22 left put Philadelphia ahead for good.
VJ Edgecombe then hit a three from the left wing as the shot clock ran down to make it 105-101, his second clutch shot in two nights. Sion James missed an open layup for Charlotte with 24 seconds left, Miller’s three cut it to three, and Jaylen Brown, who started after being a game-time decision, sealed it with two free throws with 5.2 seconds to play. Brown finished with 16, and Dean Wade had 10 assists.
Grayson Allen led Charlotte with 27 points off the bench, making seven of his 10 threes, and Miller added 24. The Hornets, on the second night of a back-to-back, were without Coby White and Kon Knueppel.
The win lifts the Sixers to six wins from seven games. They host the Chicago Bulls on Monday, when Charlotte meets the Detroit Pistons.
