Key points
- Mohan Charan Majhi gave appointment letters to 2,067 recruits on Sunday.
- The state says it has hired 48,642 people since June 2024, including 28,693 teachers.
- Odisha schools now teach in 10 tribal languages, he said.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday handed appointment letters to 2,067 sevaks, sevikas and tribal language teachers, and asked them to stand by the children in their classrooms as a friend would.
The recruits will work in schools run by the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Department. Majhi told them their first task was to instil security and self-confidence in children.
He said the BJP government was filling vacant posts in phases, keeping a promise it made before the 2024 Assembly election. Since the recruitment drives began in June 2024, he said, 48,642 people have been hired, among them 28,693 teachers.
Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes make up about 40 per cent of Odisha’s people, and Majhi said the government had taken specific steps to lift their standard of education. In line with the National Education Policy 2020, the state stresses teaching in the mother tongue at primary level, and schools now offer education in 10 tribal languages.
He also had a warning. Irregularities in schemes such as the mid-day meal programme will not be tolerated, he said, asking the teachers to stay alert and avoid any conduct that would hurt the dignity of their profession.
SC and ST Development Minister Nityananda Gond told the recruits that teaching “is a noble service and not just a job.” He added: “You are the nation-builders, and our country takes pride in you.”
Gond said the goal of a Viksit Bharat and a Prosperous Odisha depended on schools that shape good human beings.
