Tata Motors sells 73,894 cars at home in October, just ahead of Mahindra
Tata's passenger vehicle sales rose 23% to 75,426 with exports, as electric car sales jumped 75% and exports rose more than ninefold from a tiny base.

Key points
- Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles sold 75,426 vehicles in October, up 23% on a year ago.
- Domestic sales of 73,894 units edged past Mahindra's 73,338 SUVs.
- Electric vehicle sales rose 75% to 16,244.
Tata Motors has edged ahead of Mahindra in the race to be India’s second-biggest carmaker, at least for October. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles sold 73,894 vehicles in India last month, 21% more than a year ago and just 556 more than the 73,338 SUVs Mahindra reported earlier on Sunday.
Counting exports, Tata’s total came to 75,426 vehicles, up 23% from 61,295 in October 2025, the company said in a filing to the stock exchanges.
Electric cars did much of the work. Sales of EVs, including those from the subsidiary Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, climbed 75% to 16,244 units from 9,286 a year earlier, meaning more than one in five Tata cars sold in October ran on batteries.
Exports remain small but grew fast: 1,532 vehicles went overseas, against just 161 in October last year.
The two companies are locked in a close fight for second place behind market leader Maruti Suzuki, and October’s festive season, with Dussehra in the month and Diwali falling in November, was always going to be close. Both sets of numbers are dispatches from factories to dealers rather than sales to buyers. Hyundai, which reported a record 62,799 domestic units on Sunday morning, stays in fourth place.
