Toyota's October sales fall 29% to 30,360 as exports collapse, Kia stays ahead

On a day when most big carmakers posted record months, Toyota Kirloskar Motor's domestic sales were down by more than a quarter on a year ago, though they recovered sharply from September.

Key points

  1. Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 30,360 vehicles in October, down 29% from 42,892 a year ago.
  2. Domestic sales fell 27% to 29,521, while exports slumped 68% to 839 units.
  3. Domestic sales still rose 18% over September, helped by festive demand and the new Glanza.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 30,360 vehicles in October, 29% fewer than the 42,892 it sold a year earlier, bucking a month in which most of its bigger rivals reported record numbers.

Sales in India fell 27% to 29,521 units. The sharper drop came overseas, where exports slumped 68% to just 839 units from 2,635 in October 2025. The company gave no reason for the fall in shipments abroad.

The picture looks better against September. Domestic dispatches rose 18% month on month, from 25,027, as festive buying picked up. Toyota pointed to the response to the updated Glanza hatchback, launched recently, though it did not give separate figures for the model.

“The festive season has continued to generate encouraging customer interest across markets,” said Sabari Manohar, executive vice-president for sales, service and the used-car business at Toyota Kirloskar Motor. He added that “our focus remains firmly on creating value for customers through a diverse product portfolio”.

Slipping in the rankings

The weak year-on-year number leaves Toyota behind Kia for a second month running. Kia dispatched a record 33,462 vehicles in October, while Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Mahindra also reported their best months ever.

Over the full year, Toyota is still slightly ahead. From January to October it sold 3,25,274 vehicles, up 3% on the same months of 2025, with domestic sales up 4% to 2,99,140. An updated Innova Hycross is reported to be due later in November, which the company will hope lifts volumes in the coming months.
